Preemie Birth Story of Jake Joseph Zawel

After 12 weeks of regular labor which included two stays in the hospital, all the labor stopping drugs and steroids, and all the bed rest you could imagine, my water broke spontaneously on the first day of my 34th week. But, we made it to the 34th week! That was all I could think about and to me that was worth celebrating.

We were six weeks early, we had no pediatrition, no baby shower, no mattress in the crib - and most stressful of all - no name picked out for our early arrival.
So Baby Boy Zawel was born November 6th 3:30 pm. The labor was very quick, he was out and screaming after 15 minutes of some serious pushing. I got to see him for a few seconds and he was whisked away to the NICU. He was born 5 lbs. 5 ozs. He was 18.5 inches long. A huge Premie. He spent nine days in the NICU and lost five ounces.
There are a ton of things you worry about when things go unplanned, but ultimately every day he got better. I read up on the care of preemies and finished up all the last minute details we hadn't done at home.

My mom found your site and told me she ordered some things to tide us over till he put on some weight. We had run to the store for some outfits but every thing was still too big and way overpriced. On Baby Boy Zawel's last day in the Hospital he was given the strongest name we could think of Jake, (after the boxer) and we took our little fighter home. What types of clothes do preemie babies need?
LONG- AND SHORT- SLEEVED T-SHIRTS Great for layer dressing or even combined with footed or non-footed sweat pants for a casual, stay-at-home outfit. Since preemies often don't like things pulled over their heads, many of our tees feature front openings with velcro fasteners.
HATS, BOOTIES, SCRATCH MITTS Preemie accessories do serve important functions for warmth and protection, but that doesn't mean they can't be cute, too! Of course everyone knows what to do with caps and booties, but for anyone who isn't aware, scratch mitts keep babies who are prone to flail and as a result, tend to scratch their delicate faces.
ONESIES AND CREEPERS / BODY SHIRTS What's the difference between a onesie and a creeper or body shirt? Not a great deal. Technically the onesie is designed as an undergarment to be worn over the diaper and under a dress, romper, pants and top etc. A creeper or body shirt is more decorative and is often worn with just a pair of pants or even alone.
PANTS AND FOOTED PANTS These are ideal for keeping those little legs warm. Great to wear with a matching top, over a body shirt or onesie. Because they can be worn in combination with so many other garments, pants add great versatility to the baby's wardrobe.
COVERALLS AND ROMPERS Coveralls are just like footed sleepers, only they're designed for daytime wear. Like coveralls, rompers are also one-piece garments, but they are not footed.
DRESSES AND DRESS ENSEMBLES No explanation for this category except to say that no little girls wardrobe is complete without a few casual and at least a couple or more formal looking dresses.
